The legacy of state socialism on attitudes toward immigration

Does the politico–economic system affect preferences for immigration? In this study, I show that individuals exposed to life under state socialism have formed and persistently hold different attitudes toward immigration. By exploiting division reunification of Germany, estimate influence on Drawing rich individual panel data, find East Germans who lived socialism, are 15 percent more likely oppose immigration than West spent their entire in a democratic, capitalist country. This difference is persistent over time across space, largest cohorts born raised socialism. gap can be traced back longer-term deterioration trust. Evidence from members group opposed authoritarian highlights importance socialist ideology attitude formation.
